Do they even know how smart I am in French?

When talking with native speakers, I'm often reminded of this clip of Gloria in Modern Family:

Do they even know how smart I am in French? And how sad I am to be deprived of my very dear puns?

It works both ways, too. When I'm the native speaker in a meeting, I have to remember that my colleague in Bujumbura or Dakar might be making the same effort I do in English, and probably doing that in their third or fourth language.

At least in writing, the computer now checks my grammar, but I still struggle to come up with the puns.
